If you’re rich and also leave a substantial carbon footprint, then you should be aware of this climate change policy being floated around.  There is a new study out there that suggests that in order to fairly divide the climate change fight between the rich and poor internationally, they’re suggesting basing targets for emission cuts on the number of wealthy people – who, in their opinion, are the world’s biggest greenhouse gas emitters – in a country.

According to the authors of this study which was put together on Monday, they suggest that since that half the world’s climate-warming emissions come from less than a billion of its people, it makes sense to target these rich folks when setting national standards to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

Currently under the Kyoto Protocol, rich countries shoulder most of the burden for cutting the emissions that spur global warming, while developing countries such as China and India aren’t required to curb greenhouse gas pollution.  there’s an argument for both sides; the rich nations argue that developing countries have an unfair economic advantage with the lack of pollution limits while countries such as China and India counter that developed nations (including the U.S.) have historically polluted more than they have.

Meanwhile, the study also says that setting an uniform international cap on how much carbon dioxide each person can emit in order to limit global emissions; since according to them rich people emit more.  The purpose of this is to focus on rich people worldwide – not just the developed nations; the system of setting carbon-cutting targets based on wealthy individuals  would supposedly ease developing countries into any new climate change framework.

There are lots of holes in this proposed policy change regarding climate change.  Because developing nations’ industries are by and large manufacturing and the like, carbon emissions are a given, as China, India and other countries are proof of.  And I am still waiting for proof that there is in fact “global warming” out there.  I, for one, do not believe that “global warming” exists in the true sense of the word.

It is nothing but a sophisticated taxing scheme that ensures that the “rich individuals” get penalized in the pocketbook.  No real scientific proof has become available that can prove that there is such a thing as global warming.  This is why global warming, along with the United Nations are both a joke.  And the U.S. Congress is at best a bit player in this scheme and at worst major players on the world stage.  There’s a reason why the House and Senate like to rush bills through Congress without any input from lawmakers or more importantly – us.

So again, I implore each and every one of you to contact your local lawmaker(s) and express your unhappiness with this climate change legislation that is in the Senate.  If you don’t then you are getting probably what you deserve.
