The Obama administration has made the decision to fight the war with all it’s got. Not the war in Afghanistan, which it sweats and frets about and still can’t make up its mind about what to do.
No, through Obama’s communication director the administration has launched a war on – the Fox News Channel. Obama and Co. are obsessed with the cable news network.
Anita Dunn, who was caught on tape praising the mass-murdering Chinese dictator Mao, recently condemned Fox for being “a wing of the Republican Party.”
Plenty of administrations in the past have attacked the news media. But the Obama White House is different in that the focus of its attacks is on one specific media organization. “We’re going to treat them the way we would treat an opponent,” Dunn told the New York Times.
What preceded this was Obama himself whining that there is “one television station that is entirely devoted to attacking my administration.” The president recently appeared on every major Sunday morning public affairs show, every one, that is, except Fox News Sunday.
Networks that avoid news coverage of unseemly ACORN activity, over the top czar rhetoric, town hall Obama opposition and tea party patriotism seem to win the administration’s favor. But interestingly, even the New York Times has taken the position that Fox is going to come out on top in this very public skirmish.
“It’s going to spike Fox’s ratings,” the Baltimore Sun suggests.
Fox’s ratings this year are already soaring, and there are a tremendous number of independents and moderates in the audience. The president would be wise not to ignore or risk offending this sizable segment of viewers.
One political maxim comes to mind: When on the attack, try to hit a target that’s bigger than you. Obama is president of the United States, and as such he’s the leading man on the world stage.
Aiming for the Fox target shrinks his stature and telegraphs his insecurities. Worst of all, it makes him look small. And in Hollywood terms, when that starts to happen your A-list days are numbered.
