While many Americans complain about the cost of health care in the United States – and lawmakers in Washington, DC are seeking control of the medical industry – perhaps all concerned should first learn about the horrors of having access free or inexpensive health care that kills, causes suffering, and offers little in the way of health or care.

Syndicated radio talk show host and attorney Mark Levin reported that an investigation of a British health care facility revealed horrible conditions including hundreds of deaths and unsanitary conditions.

Levin, who served as chief of staff at the U.S. Justice Department during the Reagan Administration, stated on the Thursday night edition of his highly rated show that the British Secretary of Health Andy Burnham commissioned a probe of a medical facility. The probe revealed a shockingly high death rate at that hospital.

According to the report — which confirmed the earlier findings of a March 2009 probe – 400 to 1,200 patients died from 2005 to 2008 while at the medical center Mid-Staffordshire NHS.

The probe revealed that aside from the disturbing high rate of deaths in that health care facility, the investigators discovered neglect because the hospital cut corners in a bid to reach government targets. Britain possesses a socialized medical system that includes targeted cost savings at the expense of patients’ well-being.

For example, the evidence gathered by the Inquiry shows clearly that for many patients the most basic elements of care were neglected. Calls for help to use the bathroom were ignored and patients were left lying in soiled sheeting and sitting on commodes for hours, often feeling ashamed and afraid. Patients were left unwashed, at times for up to a month.

In addition, nurses lacked training, including in some cases how to read cardiac monitors, which were sometimes turned off, or how to use intravenous pumps. This meant patients did not always get the correct medication.

The shortage of nurses on wards meant call buttons went unanswered when patients were in pain or needed to use the toilet, particularly on medical wards. Relatives claimed patients were sometimes left for hours in wet or soiled sheets. Those at risk of developing pressure sores did not get adequate care.

The investigation revealed that some of the patients slept on sheets soiled with urine and feces over a long period of time, causing them to acquire infections. Relatives of the patients had to do the sheet washing at their homes.

Also, patients were not given the appropriate food, while those who were too weak to eat on their own were not assisted by hospital staff or volunteers.

“Is this what  [President Barack] Obama and the Democrats want for Americans? The moment the government takes control of something, it’s all downhill from there,” said political strategist Mike Baker.

Here are some of the findings:

The Inquiry Chairman, Robert Francis QC, concluded that patients were routinely neglected by a medical facility that was preoccupied with cost cutting, targets and processes and which lost sight of its fundamental responsibility to provide safe care.

The evidence gathered by the Inquiry shows clearly that for many patients the most basic elements of care were neglected. Calls for help to use the bathroom were ignored and patients were left lying in soiled sheeting and sitting on commodes for hours, often feeling ashamed and afraid. Patients were left unwashed, at times for up to a month.

Food and drinks were left out of the reach of patients and many were forced to rely on family members for help with feeding. Staff failed to make basic observations and pain relief was provided late or in some cases not at all.

Patients were too often discharged before it was appropriate, only to have to be re-admitted shortly afterwards. The standards of hygiene were at times awful, with families forced to remove used bandages and dressings from public areas and clean toilets themselves for fear of catching infections.

• No all-day, on-call cover by consultants because of shortages meant junior doctors were not adequately supervised. Between March and May 2008 there was only one consultant in A&E.

• The trust had two clinical decision units (CDUs) which staff said were used as dumping grounds to avoid breaching the four-hour target for being treated in A&E, one of which was not allocated any staff. Ill patients were placed in the smaller CDU without a dedicated nurse to care for them.

• There were not enough nurses to care properly for emergency patients. A review of staffing levels in 2007-8 found the trust was short of 120 nurses, 17 of whom were needed in A&E.

• Nurses lacked training, including in some cases how to read cardiac monitors, which were sometimes turned off, or how to use intravenous pumps. This meant patients did not always get the correct medication.

• The shortage of nurses on wards meant call buttons went unanswered when patients were in pain or needed to use the toilet, particularly on medical wards. Relatives claimed patients were sometimes left for hours in wet or soiled sheets. Those at risk of developing pressure sores did not get adequate care.

• Delays in operations were commonplace, especially for trauma patients at weekends. Surgery might be delayed for four days in a row during which time patients would receive “nil by mouth” for most of the day.

• There was often no experienced surgeon in the hospital after 9pm, with one recently qualified doctor responsible for covering all surgical patients and admitting up to 20 patients a night.

• Few patients were given the drug warfarin to help prevent blood clots despite deep vein thrombosis being a major cause of death in patients following surgery.

• Essential equipment was not always available or working.

• The trust board was more concerned with finance, targets and achieving foundation status, with little evidence that poor standards of nursing care were identified or discussed. A doubling of the rate of C difficile infection in early 2006 was not reported to the board or public. In 2006-7 the trust set a target of saving £10m, equal to 8% of turnover. More than 150 positions were lost, including nurses.

Don’t expect to read any of this report in U.S. newspapers or newsmagazines. At least not until ObamaCare becomes a reality.

I think that we all knew that the Democrats were and are capable of doing anything in terms of the health care bill. The American public has voiced their displeasure about the current health care legislation, yet the Democrats have this disregard about what we, the citizens of the United States of America, want.

But that has never stopped the lefties before and it isn’t stopping them right now, either.

Apparently, the Democratic Party, and especially President Obama, have a trick up their sleeves. Specifically, Obama is working on health care legislation that is intended to reconcile differences between House and Senate Democrats that could possibly be attached to a budget bill, and most importantly to the Democrats, attempt to avoid a Republican filibuster. Administration officials say that the president’s proposal will be on the Internet by Monday morning.

Piggybacking the legislation is the Democrats’ way of not allowing Republican input in terms of this potential legislation; all that is needed is a mere 51 votes, a simple majority.

Obama’s plan would expand coverage to 30 million people, require Americans to carry health insurance or face steep financial penalties and stop insurers from denying coverage due to pre-existing health conditions. However, the abortion issue is unclear as of this post.

What’s interesting about all of this is that Obama, in the past, has said that he is open to Republicans’ ideas for changing the health care system. Yet, the GOP has been basically shut out of providing input in closed-door meetings.  A dog-and-pony show, if you will.

Depending on the meeting that is scheduled to take place nest week some time, the Democrats have three options available to them:

  • Pass a greatly diluted version of the health care bill
  • Pass nothing at all.
  • Use “reconciliation”.

Passing the highly-diluted bill and/or nothing at all would bring negative consequences to the Democrats, as polls have indicated that the American public is unhappy with health care in its current state.

And reconciliation will send the message to all of us that the Democrats have no qualms about passage of a health care bill that will not benefot the vast majority of Americans. Also factor in that Obama wanting to mandate that all Americans have health insurance or else is at best, ill-advised, or at worst un-Constitutional. In other words, it isn’t the Congress or Obama’s place to dictate to us whether we should purchase health insurance or not. The Democrats have to realize that there’s a thing called “freedom of choice” available to all of us, whether the Democrats like it or not.

Another important thing about Obama’s legislation: the cost. It is estimated to cost around $1 trillion over ten years. My question is this: how will it be paid for? Short answer from the Democrats – out of our pockets, in the form of tax increases to the middle-class and Medicare cuts.

I implore the Republicans to attend this meeting, if for anything else, to find out that the Democrats, especially Obama, have no intention of cobbling together a bipartisan health care bill that is palatable to everyone concerned. And expect the Demcorats to use the “reconciliation” card. A scare tactic, so to speak.

Folks, as usual, our work is nowhere near complete. I implore the readers of The Republican Temple to either email, write or call theior representatives in their districts – or do all three. The flood of correspondence will most definitely get their attention; if it doesn’t, then they can very easily be voted out of office in November. It’s that simple.

And that’s your “call to arms.”

Obamacare On Life Support

Written by Stephen Rhodes on January 21, 2010 - Comments No Comments

The healthcare reform bill that President Obama has been touting for what seems like forever was given perhaps its last rites as Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has said that she lacks the votes that are necessary to pass through the House – a potential death knell to the biggest item on Obama’s agenda.

The concession means that there’s little-to-no-hope for a WH-backed to pass through the House, followed by a separate measure making changes sought by House members. Pelosi added:

“In its present form without any changes I don’t think it’s possible to pass the Senate bill in the House. I don’t see the votes for it at this time.”

The way things look right now, the Democrats haven’t made any decisions on their options, which would include breaking up the bill into smaller sections. But with the recent – and badly needed - victory of Scott Brown in Massachusetts, the President and others are now talking about legislation that hopes to garner widespread support.

Folks, this isn’t rocket science we’re talking about here. Our country does need its healthcare system fixed. But at the same time, this country, the last time I checked, aren’t clamoring for reform that smacks of universal health care. All you have to do is look at the state of Massachusetts. Their version of universal health care is a total mess.

If Congress, especially the Democrats, had simply allowed the GOP to be involved in the putting together of the healthcare reform legislation, perhaps we wouldn’t be at this point. But because of the Dems’ tendency to not let other people be involved in the process, not to mention the utter lack of transparency, the healthcare reform bill is in shambles.

The best way for this to work for everyone involved is to do this: start over. Indeed, start this bill over from scratch. Let the Republicans become involved in the process and make this a truly bipartisan effort. But should the Democrats keep things the way they are, nothing is going to really change. Which bodes well for the Republicans when the midterm elections come around in November.

Time is of the essence, and the bottom line is this. Be proactive and do the right thing or pay the consequences at the midterm elections. We, the people, expect nothing less form our elected officials. to do otherwise will facilitate a huge issuance of pink slips near the end of the year.

Earlier this week, National Right to Work president Mark Mix appeared on Glenn Beck’s Fox News show to explain how Big Labor is working to ensure unionized firms are exempted from the new taxes on other health insurance plans.

Mix and Beck also discuss how the union bosses are exploiting the very workers they claim to represent and how eager they are to sell out workers if it means more union special privileges from their pals in the Obama Administration.

The House and Senate may be out of session on winter recess, but Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are busy threatening legislators… cutting secret, back-room deals… they’re twisting arms… all in a desperate attempt to pass ObamaCare.

Why are they so desperate?

Because, contrary to what you’ve been hearing from the liberal mainstream media, ObamaCare is not a done deal… and Obama, Pelosi and Reid know it.

Obama, Pelosi and Reid know that ObamaCare can be stopped. That’s why they are desperately issuing threats and cutting secret deals.

And their desperation is proof positive that you can stop them.

But that means that each and every one of us is going to have to step up and keep fighting against ObamaCare.

According to recent reports, Obama, Pelosi and Reid are actually threatening Members of Congress.

 LifeNews.com issued the following item:

“Congressman Bart Stupak… says the Obama administration is trying to bully him. … Stupak told CNS News that the White House and top Congressional Democrats are attempting to twist his arm to accept the Reid-Nelson ‘compromise’ language that still allows massive taxpayer financing of abortions.”

Another report from Robert Costa with National Review indicates that Obama, Pelosi and Reid may have moved from bullying to bribery:

“After watching the Senate’s health-care debate, Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.) tells NRO that he has one message for President Obama and House speaker Nancy Pelosi: ‘You don’t buy me off.’”

“Stupak tells us that he’s disappointed that Democratic leaders have offered him legislative favors in exchange for supporting Obamacare. “‘This shouldn’t be a bill where you use hush money,’ says Stupak.”

Stupak may be standing firm in opposition to these sickening tactics but don’t count on that to last.

Senator Ben Nelson’s recent capitulation, which allowed ObamaCare to move forward, should teach us that these iron-fist-velvet-glove tactics can work.

And that means we have our work cut out for us.

If we are going to stop ObamaCare, it’s up to us to barrage these elected officials with the most effective legislative weapon at the disposal of average Americans like us – personalized Blast Faxes – and demand that they stand firm in the face of these threats and buy-off attempts.

As mentioned above, this fight is far from over. Both the House and the Senate will have to vote yet again to pass ObamaCare.

And changing just a few votes could mean victory for the American people. There is still time to defeat ObamaCare, but we, the American people, cannot let up now.

We can stop it. We must stop it. And to do so, just click here.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has won his second cloture vote on the ObamaCare bill, the “Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act” — but the bill can STILL BE STOPPED!

The liberal Democrats snuck through the first vote on their socialist health care bill — IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, at 1:00 a.m. Monday.

Then today — in the early morning hours — they held another cloture vote… and barely squeaked it through.

If there had been just ONE Democrat willing to STOP this socialistic health care bill, it could have been stopped this morning — but they have one more chance to do exactly that… on WEDNESDAY at 1:00 p.m.

That means that TODAY, it’s up to YOU AND ME to stop the government takeover of health care in America — before the next vote!

We’ve been able to keep the pressure on both Democrats and Republicans, letting them know that WE ARE WATCHING THEM and that we DEMAND they put a STOP to this radical monstrosity of a bill. And despite the fact that we lost the first votes, the good news is… we ARE having an effect on them, and WE CAN STILL DEFEAT THIS BILL!

The bill passed through so far STILL has to clear more hurdles — and despite the fact that all 60 Democrats and Republicans voted for the first clotures, all 60 of them have NOT committed to voting for tomorrow’s cloture vote!

With these early-morning votes, Harry Reid has successfully moved the Obamacare bill forward. But now, he has to survive another cloture vote to end the GOP filibuster on this bill — and again, he’s going to need all 60 votes to save the bill. But this time is our BEST chance to make sure he does NOT get them!

Remember, several of the “on the fence” Democrats were convinced to vote for Reid’s clotures — not because of their principles — but because they were BRIBED.

You read that right. Just take a look at the pork that was added to this monstrosity of a bill, just to bribe enough Senators to vote for it:

  • With the bill hanging in the balance, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-NE) won a provision exempting his state from paying the usual share of costs for new Medicaid patients. The deal, which critics have dubbed the “Cornhusker Kickback,” is expected to cost the federal government $100 million over 10 years.
  • Before a close vote last month, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) won an even larger break for her state — an estimated $300 million in extra federal spending, in a move now derisively called the “Louisiana Purchase.”
  • Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) made sure that certain insurance companies in his state are off the hook from a new $7 billion dollar tax.
  • Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) got his kickback — a $100 million bonus for the University of Connecticut… to do with whatever they want.
  • Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-VT) was “persuaded” to drop his concerns after Senator Reid offered his state a $10 billion grant for “community health centers”- money that could easily be funneled to facilities that perform abortions.
  • Three states — Pennsylvania, New York and Florida — all won protections for their Medicare Advantage beneficiaries at a time when the program is facing cuts nationwide.
  • Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) won a promise from Reid to support his plan to expand eligibility for health insurance.
  • The Senators from Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming will get the “Frontier Freebie” — they’ll see an increase in Medicare payments to hospitals and doctors, because “at least 50 percent of their counties are ‘frontier counties,’ defined as those having a population density less than six people per square mile.”
  • Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), chairman of the Senate health committee, got a provision inserted to increase Medicare payments to certain “low-volume hospitals” in Grinnell, Keokuk and Spirit Lake, treating limited numbers of Medicare patients.
  • Even the Democrats themselves are starting to complain about this obvious “Cash for Cloture” bribing going on. When Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) couldn’t get past the reporters swarming Ben Nelson on her way to the cloture vote, she quipped, “I know I’m not as important as Senator Nelson. I didn’t get the money for my state. I was too stupid.”
  • The word is getting out about these OUTRIGHT BRIBES for votes. And with that public scrutiny, several Democrats are wavering in their support for this bill — we need to ensure that they feel the heat so that they will see the light!

We MUST NOT lose this fight. Harry Reid DOES NOT have a guarantee of all 60 votes he needs to enact cloture and force a vote on his bill — but you can BET he’s doing everything he can to GET those final one or two! If we can STOP him from getting them — that means the bill WOULD DIE!

We can still win, by keeping the Democrats from getting the 60 votes they need on the next cloture vote… but we can’t do it without your help!

DO NOT GET DISCOURAGED — there are still several Democrats that we know of, who STILL might not vote for cloture. At the same time, there are a few liberal GOP RINOs who might “jump ship” and vote Yes. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE SENATORS NEED TO KEEP HEARING FROM US TO BE CONVINCED!

We CANNOT let the radical liberals in Congress — and the White House — force this plan for socialized health care on the American people! That’s why we’ve set up our website to enable you to send a strong message to every single member of the U.S. Senate, opposing this outrageous plan.

For about what it would cost you in time and telephone charges, you can send Faxes to Democrats, Republicans, Independents — EVERYONE in the U.S. Senate, demanding that they reject this socialized health care plan NOW!

This fight CAN BE WON! Please, take action right away to stop this bill in the U.S. Senate! Click here to take action!!
